Team History:
- The New York Raiders burst onto the scene in 1972, aiming to challenge the NHL’s dominance in the Big Apple. They were the WHA’s flagship franchise, but their path was fraught with obstacles.
- Despite having Camille Henry as their head coach and the second overall pick in the inaugural WHA Draft (Al Sims), the Raiders struggled to compete with the established New York Rangers and the newly formed New York Islanders.
- Nassau County officials denied them access to the brand-new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, leaving Madison Square Garden as their only option. Playing as tenants of the Rangers, the Raiders faced an uphill battle.
- Financial woes plagued the team, and attendance remained low. Their average crowd of 5,868 paled in comparison to the NHL’s Rangers (17,494) and Islanders (11,996).
- The situation became untenable, and during their second season, the team underwent a name change, becoming the New York Golden Blades. But even that didn’t save them.
- On November 21, 1973, they relocated to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, rebranding once more as the Jersey Knights. Three names, two homes, and less than two full seasons—such was the Raiders’ tumultuous journey.
-
Why They Are No Longer in Operation:
- The Raiders faced fierce competition from the NHL, unfavorable leases, and financial instability. Ultimately, they couldn’t sustain themselves in the hockey landscape.
- Despite their short-lived existence, the New York Raiders left an indelible mark on hockey history, reminding us that even in defeat, there’s valor.
