This premium throwback shirt celebrates one of Wisconsin's northernmost professional baseball teams. The Wausau Mets joined the Midwest League as an expansion franchise in 1975 when the league chose the city of 32,000 over Lafayette, Indiana at the 1974 Baseball Winter Meetings. Based in Wausau, Wisconsin, they became the northernmost stop in the Class A circuit during the 1970s.
From 1975 to 1978, Wausau served as a farm club for the National League's New York Mets, playing their home games at historic Athletic Park. The team competed against intra-state rivals from Appleton and Wisconsin Rapids as well as clubs from Iowa and Illinois, bringing professional baseball back to Wausau after its previous minor league team, the Lumberjacks, had left town in 1957.
On the field, the Mets struggled throughout their time in Wausau. The team's best season came in 1976 when they finished 56-73, still 17 games under .500. Their inaugural 1975 campaign saw them post a 51-77 record, scoring 482 runs while giving up 609 runs, the most in the circuit.
Despite their lackluster performance, the team featured several players who would go on to Major League careers, most notably Juan Berenguer (1975), Neil Allen (1976), and future 1986 World Series hero Mookie Wilson, who hit .290 for the club as a 21-year-old in 1978. Following the 1978 season, the franchise was rebranded as the Wausau Timbers and continued in the Midwest League until moving to Geneva, Illinois in 1991, where it remains today as the Kane County Cougars.
