The Utah Starzz were one of the eight original franchises of the Women's National Basketball Association, beginning play in the league's inaugural 1997 season and playing their home games at the Delta Center. Their unique name was partially a nod to the old ABA team, the Utah Stars, but with the double Z at the end like the Utah Jazz, whose ownership operated the Starzz franchise.

After struggling in their early seasons, the Starzz steadily improved with the addition of players like 7'2" center Margo Dydek, eventually posting winning records in their final three seasons and reaching their competitive peak in 2002. That final year in Utah saw the team achieve their best-ever record of 20-12 and their deepest playoff run, defeating the dynasty Houston Comets in the first round before falling to the Los Angeles Sparks in the Western Conference Finals, after which the franchise was sold to Spurs Sports & Entertainment and relocated to San Antonio.
