The Utah Prospectors (sometimes called the "Pros") competed in the minor league Western Basketball Association during the 1978-79 season, playing their home games at the Salt Palace and marking the return of professional basketball to Utah after the ABA's Utah Stars folded three years earlier. Under the guidance of former BYU All-American guard Dick Nemelka as coach, the team competed in a seven-team league that included franchises from Arizona, California, Montana, Nevada, Washington, and Utah.

Despite finishing sixth in the league with a 19-29 record, the Prospectors qualified for the playoffs where they lost a best-of-three first-round series to the Reno Bighorns in March 1979. The team's existence was short-lived, as the announcement that the NBA's New Orleans Jazz would relocate to Salt Lake City for the 1979-80 season effectively ended the Prospectors' run, with the Western Basketball Association folding entirely that summer.
