This premium throwback shirt celebrates one of Texas hockey's most memorable teams from the late 1990s. The Waco Wizards were part of the inaugural season of the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) in 1996, bringing professional ice hockey to central Texas fans at the Heart of Texas Coliseum.
The team's early years were challenging, with coaching instability and struggles on the ice. In their second season (1997-98), they posted a league-worst 18-48-0-3 record, making what came next even more remarkable. The 1998-99 season saw an incredible worst-to-first turnaround as the Wizards captured their division title with an impressive 40-22-0-7 record, marking their only winning season and playoff appearance in franchise history.
Despite this success, financial difficulties soon plagued the organization. By their fourth season in 1999, the team was unable to pay rent at the Heart of Texas Coliseum, leading to their abrupt mid-season folding in December 1999 after just 27 games. Their brief but memorable run helped establish hockey in central Texas during an era of minor league expansion across the Southwest.
Our distressed, vintage-look design captures that authentic late-90s hockey nostalgia with a perfectly weathered, cracked appearance that looks like it's been in your collection since the team's division championship season.
