The Mammoths' brief but memorable run culminated in an exciting playoff journey that saw them advance all the way to the league championship finals. Unfortunately, they fell short of capturing the title, losing to the Huntsville Channel Cats in what would prove to be not only the team's final series but also the league's last championship. The Southern Hockey League disbanded during the summer of 1996 after just a single season of operation, bringing the Mammoths' promising story to an abrupt end. While Winston-Salem's hockey tradition would continue with other franchises in later years, the Mammoths remain a distinctive chapter in the city's rich sports heritage.
