Relive a groundbreaking chapter in women's basketball history with our exclusive St. Louis Streak tribute t-shirt, celebrating one of the earliest professional women's basketball teams. The St. Louis Streak were a two-season entry in the Women's Professional Basketball League (WPBL), the first professional basketball league for female players, from 1979 to 1981. They played their home games at Kiel Auditorium, the former home of the NBA's St. Louis Hawks.
During their brief existence, the Streak's finest player was Liz Silcott, a talented 28-year-old Canadian known as "Liz The Whiz." Despite being viewed by many as an emotionally troubled player who disliked practice and showed little interest in defense, Silcott was undoubtedly one of the most talented players of her era. The team was owned by Vince Gennaro, who at age 27 was the youngest majority owner of a WBL team. As president and general manager, Gennaro ensured the Streak always paid its players their modest salaries on time, unlike many other teams in the struggling league.
Unfortunately, financial difficulties plagued the WBL from the beginning. By the end of their run, only Dallas, Chicago, and St. Louis seemed to be sustainable franchises, but three teams were not enough to maintain a viable league. The WBL folded in the spring of 1981, bringing an end to the St. Louis Streak and the pioneering women's professional basketball league.
This t-shirt features our exclusive St. Louis Streak logo with an authentically distressed, cracked, vintage feel that captures the nostalgic spirit of early women's professional basketball. The design appears on the front only, with a clean, blank back.
