Wear a piece of Chipotle's failed Asian expansion history. ShopHouse Kitchen was Chipotle's attempt to replicate its burrito bowl success with Southeast Asian cuisine, offering build-your-own rice and noodle bowls with Thai, Vietnamese, and Malaysian-inspired ingredients. Launched in 2011, the fast-casual concept promised to bring Chipotle's customization model to Asian food with quality ingredients and the assembly-line format that made the parent company a fast-casual giant.

Despite Chipotle's expertise and resources, ShopHouse became a high-profile failure that never achieved viability. The Asian cuisine concept proved far more complex than burritos with unfamiliar ingredients confusing mainstream American customers, difficulties executing authentic Southeast Asian flavors at fast-casual scale and speed, higher food costs and operational complexity than the simpler burrito model, failure to achieve the same unit economics that made Chipotle profitable, intense competition in the crowded Asian fast-casual segment, and fundamental questions about whether the Chipotle formula translated to Asian cuisine created mounting losses. Chipotle closed all ShopHouse locations in 2017 after six years of failed experimentation.
