Despite legendary status and operating the historic Clifton's Brookdale location with its famous indoor redwood forest, the cafeteria couldn't survive into the modern era. An ambitious 2015 multi-million dollar restoration and reinvention as a multi-level bar and event space never achieved profitability, the COVID-19 pandemic delivering devastating losses to the expensive Downtown LA operation, difficulties balancing historical preservation with sustainable business operations, changing Downtown demographics and competition, mounting operational costs exceeding revenue from the complex multi-concept venue, and the fundamental challenge of making the nostalgic cafeteria format economically viable created insurmountable losses. The last Clifton's closed permanently in 2022.
