The St. Petersburg Pelicans were one of the eight original franchises that began playing in the Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989. The team was managed by Bobby Tolan, with Dick Bosman, Ozzie Virgil, Sr. and Tom Zimmer serving as coaches. They played their home games at Al Lang Stadium in Downtown St. Petersburg, Florida.
The Pelicans were owned by Jim Morley, the 32-year-old Colorado property developer who conceived and founded the entire Senior Professional Baseball Association. Morley came up with the idea for a 35-and-over professional baseball league while on vacation at the Great Barrier Reef. Noted baseball author Peter Golenbock served as the color commentator on Pelicans radio broadcasts and chronicled the club's 1989-90 championship season in his book "The Forever Boys."
The Pelicans excelled on the field, going 42-30 in the regular season to win the Northern Division title. Steve Henderson hit .352 for the club, and Lenny Randle batted .349. Milt Wilcox went 12-3 on the mound, and Jon Matlack added 10 wins. Led by Lamar Johnson's home run and three RBIs, the Pelicans defeated the West Palm Beach Tropics 12-4 on February 4, 1990, to win the league's championship game. Though the team returned for a second season, the league folded midway through that campaign in December 1990, making the Pelicans the first and only champions in SPBA history.
