Credit card networks like Visa and Mastercard implemented new rules restricting third-party payment processing and increasing interchange fees, fundamentally undermining Plastiq's economics as the spread between fees charged to customers and costs paid to card networks evaporated. Customer acquisition costs remained high, fraud and payment failures created losses, the business model's thin margins couldn't sustain operations under new card network fee structures, and mounting losses as the core business became economically unviable created collapse. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2023.
