Steve's Ice Cream T-Shirt - Ice Cream Industry Defunct Logo Tee
Wear a piece of ice cream innovation history. Steve's Ice Cream was a pioneering Somerville, Massachusetts ice cream shop that revolutionized the industry by inventing "mix-ins" - crushing candy bars, cookies, and toppings into premium ice cream on a frozen marble slab. Founded by Steve Herrell in 1973, the shop created the concept that inspired Cold Stone Creamery and countless imitators, making Steve's legendary among ice cream enthusiasts for transforming how Americans customized their frozen treats.
Despite inventing a concept that transformed the ice cream industry, Steve's couldn't capitalize long-term on its own innovation. Founder Steve Herrell sold the business in 1977, new owners expanded too rapidly through franchising without maintaining quality control, the mix-in concept was widely copied by competitors including chains with better capitalization, operational difficulties managing franchise locations, dilution of the original quality and experience that made Steve's special, and mounting challenges as the novelty wore off and better-funded chains perfected the format led to decline. The chain contracted and essentially disappeared by the late 1990s, though Herrell went on to found Herrell's Ice Cream continuing his legacy.
